Transforming Touch® is a somatic approach to healing developmental trauma. Developmental trauma happens early on in life, while the child is preverbal. Typically this time period is considered in utero up to the age of 3. It is during this critical time that the nervous system is built and the set-point for nervous system regulation is formed. Ideally during this time a child will have a smooth gestation and birth and will have a healthy adult with whom they can co-regulate (in order to make neural connections that foster resilience and regulation in the nervous system). If this doesn't happen ruptures may occur. These ruptures may disrupt a person's life until they are addressed and processed. Presence, regulation, and relationship are all vital components in the Transforming Touch® method to heal these ruptures.
This may not sound super flashy, and honestly, it's not. But if you have dealt with constant physical and/or mental symptoms that restrict your life, you know how valuable simply feeling stable, balanced, and regulated is. It can literally open up a whole new world where you can trust yourself in varied circumstances and have the confidence to know you are ok despite externals. This piece often is the hidden key to healing mysterious physical symptoms that have not responded to other treatments.
This work is ideal for people who...
-Experience chronic physical symptoms in your body. This could be anything from persistent pain, digestive distress, headaches, migraines, nerve pain, fatigue
-Limit what you do and how you do it to accommodate sensitivities. These could be sensitivities to being around other people, physical stimulation, food, restricting work
-Experience anxiety and/or depression consistently
-Have an autoimmune disease diagnosis, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, and other chronic diagnosis
What is a somatic approach?
A somatic healing approach utilizes the body as the primary access point to resolve internal conflict. Particular attention is focused on observing and being with sensation, noticing how the body responds to various stimuli, and developing tools to regulate the system that are body oriented.
What does a session look like?
A Tranforming Touch® session begins with a check-in. How are you on all levels? What is alive for you now? Then there is a protocol that can either be hands on or facilitated by presence awareness. After the table/presence work is complete, there is a check-in at the end for reflections and questions.
How many sessions will I need?
Transforming Touch® is a modality that is process orientated. Regulating the nervous system takes time. However, often clients feel changes after the first sessions such as more restful sleep, less reactivity, a feeling of embodiment, less anxiety.
My personal experience with Tranforming Touch®:
Years ago I was diagnosed with Lyme disease. After a long time of experiencing mysterious symptoms, I received a diagnosis. That diagnosis was the beginning on a long journey of trail and error discovering what would really heal me. I went to all the doctors and alternative practitioners. Nothing really helped resolve the condition completely. Then I discovered a whole body of research affirming the role of the nervous system (in particular the limbic system) in chronic illness. This information resonated with me on a deep level and I absorbed myself in healing in this way. To my amazement, the symptoms resolved. I knew I had to learn how to facilitate this process for others. This is how I came to study and believe whole-heartedly in the Transforming Touch® method.
